Nufarm seeks protection against dumped 2,4-D

Australian based crop protection company, Nufarm Limited, has submitted an anti-dumping claim relating to imports of the phenoxy herbicide, 2,4-D.

Nufarm operates a major 2,4-D manufacturing facility at Laverton North in Victoria and has been Australia’s leading supplier of the widely used post emergent herbicide for many years.

The company claims illegally dumped imports of 2,4-D have directly contributed to a 16% loss of its market share over the past four years, resulting in lost earnings totalling more than $10 million.

Nufarm’s submission to the Australian Customs Service details claims relating to allegedly dumped 2,4-D product from the United Kingdom, India and China. The submission contends that this product was sold into Australia at artificially low prices and in contravention of the anti-dumping provisions.

Nufarm’s Managing Director, Doug Rathbone, said the Federal Government’s anti-dumping legislation is in place to ensure there is an even playing field with respect to competition between local producers and importers.

“We have built our business on the basis of being able to successfully compete with other suppliers of the same product. We certainly support a competitive market, but we want to compete on a fair basis.”

Mr Rathbone said Nufarm has a major capital investment to protect and continues to reinvest significant sums in new 2,4-D based products.

“We have a long term commitment to continue supplying Australian farmers with locally developed products which aid productivity and, in turn, help those farmers compete with other agricultural exporting nations.

“This application is not aimed at driving an increase in the price of 2,4-D”, said Mr Rathbone. “If we succeed with this application, however, I would expect to see a gradual recovery in our market share position.”
