Preventing lodging - Nufarm UK

Chlormequat still delivers the goods

Many of the popular current wheat varieties have relatively poor standing power. This was clearly demonstrated last spring when many crops were flattened by heavy rain and storms

The key to maintaining straw stiffness is a 'little and often' approach by applying a programme of plant growth regulators rather than applying a large dose all at once. All Nufarm 3C chlormequat products carry a split dose recommendation in winter wheat

Nufarm tested a number of early applied plant growth regulator treatrments in 2006. Chlormequat (Stabilan 700) performed well, especially when applied as a split treatment. See graph below showing the straw shortening effect of a range of treatments

Stabilan also gave a cost-effective yield response of over a fifth of a tonne per hectare even in the absence of lodging

Always read the label: use pesticides safely
